Why Grace?

It would be impossible for any of us to live up to God's perfect standard of righteousness, so it's true that no one would ever make it to heaven without grace. But the impossibility of salvation by works is not the only reason that salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. God grants eternal life only by grace because it's the only way that God is exalted in the highest.

There's a key phrase in Ephesians 2:8-9 which often gets overlooked because of the great wealth of truth in the verse. The verse says:

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

The phrase "lest anyone should boast" reveals that if salvation were by works, men would have a right to boast about his/her own salvation. God works salvation in men and women by His own might alone. We do not and can not contribute anything. This way we stay in our proper place of humility before God and can live a life based on thanks. This position of humility and thanks is the perfect place to be for us to experience God's provision in the Christian life. God's wisdom is perfect! Who are we to add works to His gospel?
